The Need For Regular Aircon Servicing in Singapore

Amidst the sweltering heat and incessant humidity of Singapore, air-conditioning is a necessity in both offices and homes alike. However, not many Singaporeans are aware of the importance of serving their air-conditioning units – both financially and for our personal health.

All air conditioner units’ coils, fins and filters require regular maintenance in order to operate effectively and efficiently. Disregarding proper servicing will result in a decline of the air conditioning’s performance and a notable increase in electrical consumption.

Have you wondered why after a period of time, the air from your air-conditioning unit is not as cold as before? Clogged or dirty air-conditioning filters block normal air flow and reduce its efficiency significantly. Air-conditioning units can lose up to 5% of its efficiency each year if it is not properly maintained and serviced. To maintain the efficiency of the air conditioning unit, the filters need to be cleaned, or sometimes replaced on a regular basis. By regularly servicing your air-conditioning units, you are increasing its lifespan, ensuring a more cool and comfortable home or office environment and most importantly, saving on electricity bills.

Constant usage also makes our air-conditioning units breeding grounds for dirt, dust, harmful bacteria, germs and even fungus. This would mean that we are constantly breathing in contaminated air, potentially leading to illnesses and damage to our health, especially to children or those with respiratory problems. Furthermore, when air conditioners remove heat and dehumidify the area, water is produced as a waste product. The moisture accumulated in the air-conditioners’ fan coil unit during its cooling process promotes the formation of mould, microbes, mildew etc, all of which release a very unpleasant and foul smell. The water in the inner fan coil will condense and will be drained through the drainage pipe. If there is a blockage in the pipe by dirt, trapping water and it will cause the pipe to overflow and the air conditioner to leak.

All these problems can be avoided by regularly serving our air-conditioning units. As a rough guide, general air-con servicing should be done at least once every three months, while chemical cleaning should be done at least once yearly. A typical professional general air-conditioning service includes: a thorough checking and cleaning of the front panel, cover, evaporator coil, vacuuming of the drainage system, cleaning or replacement of the air filter, and lubricating of the unit’s parts if required. When general service is unable to improve the condition of a badly clogged air-conditioning unit, chemical servicing is needed. During chemical servicing, the air conditioner is dismantled and its parts are chemically washed and cleaned. If our air-conditioning units are serviced regularly, we can be assured of a much cooler, comfortable and healthier home or office environment that saves us money in the long run.
